The Los Angeles Lakers have waived Rafael Castro and Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones, but they still need another move before their roster is ready for opening night.
Law Murray of The Athletic reported Saturday’s cuts. Both players are expected to join the Coachella Valley Lakers in the G League.
The bigger question remains Dalton Knecht. The Lakers have more than 15 players on guaranteed standard contracts and are exploring trades rather than simply releasing someone and carrying the salary. Knecht is viewed as the most likely player to be moved.
According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, Los Angeles has spoken with the Bulls and Jazz, among other teams. Siegel also confirmed discussions with the Bucks.
The Lakers have continued making recent trade calls in attempts to move Dalton Knecht instead of outright waiving him, with LA having communication with the Bucks, Bulls, and Jazz, among others, sources told @ClutchPoints.

It’s become clear Knecht’s future isn’t with the Lakers. https://t.co/MgwowOfeNq
As Hoops Wire reported earlier this week, league sources say the Lakers have been looking to trade Knecht after his role diminished last season.
Jake Fischer of The Stein Line subsequently reported exploratory talks involving Knecht and second-round draft capital for Bucks center Jericho Sims, though he also heard doubt about that deal happening.
The Lakers could use the remaining time before Monday’s deadline to pursue an agreement. If they ultimately waive a player with a guaranteed salary, waiting until Sunday or Monday wouldn’t change that cap obligation.
Saturday’s cuts move Castro and Tait-Jones toward their likely G League destination. Finding a deal for Knecht remains the more pressing NBA roster issue.
