Lane Kiffin and the No. 22 LSU Tigers had a lot to smile about after their dominant 31-0 win over the No. 16 Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday. Tigers quarterback Sam Leavitt put on a thrilling four-touchdown show, and it showed on the scoreboard. Leavitt also finished 31-of-38 for 289 yards.
After the game, Kiffin was in a jolly mood while talking to reporters. He had some interesting comments, though, when asked about Mississippi State being without some of its key players due to injury, including star quarterback Kamario Taylor and running back Fluff Bothwell.
When asked if he knew LSU was facing a Mississippi State team without some of its key players, Kiffin pushed back against that reasoning.
"I don't have a lot of empathy for injuries," Kiffin told reporters in a postgame news conference. "This team from day one has gotten more bad breaks than any team in the country. We have a lot of people sitting on our sidelines, and we won 31-0. Really proud of our players and coaches for moving people around."
Elsewhere in the news conference, Kiffin talked more about how injuries might become the storyline following the game.
"In so many ways, obviously, we handed away, so really glad with their response. I know people will talk about their injuries, but, you know, we got a break today, so I don't think we've gotten many breaks since the beginning of the season in a lot of areas," he said. "I could start listing them on and off the field."
He added, "So, it happens, and you still got to play. There's plenty of backups that went around the country, and, you know, Levy's a great coach and a great offense, and they got really good receivers. So, really proud of our defense to shut them out."
Next up, the Tigers take on the Auburn Tigers on Saturday, Oct. 24.
