Shortly after the Los Angeles Chargers suffered a 22-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that dropped the Chargers to 0-6 on Sunday, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh could dismiss first-year offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel during the club's Week 7 bye.
"Pass game specialist Adam Gase, a former head coach of the Jets and Dolphins, is expected to take over if McDaniel is fired," Florio added.
While speaking with reporters after Sunday's defeat, Harbaugh acknowledged that "we have to address everything, and especially offensively."
"We're going to look at everything," Harbaugh responded when asked whether McDaniel will continue to call plays, per Anthony Gharib of ESPN. "The job I'm doing, it starts with me. We'll watch this and get with our offensive coaches. I see the effort, I see the work being put in in the meetings, on the practice field, and to get that to translate to the field is what's necessary. Feel bad for our players, our team, our coaches, our fans. And [offense] needs to be addressed."
According to ESPN stats, the Chargers began Monday ranked 26th in the NFL with an average of 287.2 yards per game and 30th with an average of 15.0 points scored per contest. Meanwhile, any hope Harbaugh had that McDaniel could get the best out of quarterback Justin Herbert may now be little more than a memory.
Per Pro Football Reference, Herbert ended the weekend ranked last in the league among qualified players with a 26.8 adjusted QBR and 30th out of 32 quarterbacks with a 68.8 passer rating for the campaign. According to StatMuse, Herbert has committed a league-worst 10 turnovers this season.
"I don't know," Herbert said about the struggles he and the Chargers offense have endured since Week 1. "If I had the answers, then we'd definitely be having a different conversation."
Following their Week 7 bye, the Chargers will be the road team for a matchup against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Nov. 1. It sounds like Harbaugh's side could have a different offensive play-caller when that contest gets underway.
"There's no justification," Harbaugh added during his postgame comments. "Anything I would say would sound like an excuse. I'm opposed to that to the core and pointing fingers because I believe this is a team game. But definitely offensively, we need to evaluate, and we need to look at it all -- everything we're doing and how we're doing it."
The 2-4 Rams next play at the 3-3 Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 25. As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Rams as 5.5-point road favorites for that game.
