Jets' Aaron Glenn given strong Dolphins warning about job security amid Mike Tomlin chatter

From late August through early October, numerous reports suggested that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson could look to replace head coach Aaron Glenn with former Pittsburgh Steelers coach and current NBC analyst Mike Tomlin in January 2027 if the Jets endure what is considered to be yet another woeful season.

For a mailbag published on Thursday, NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY gave Jets fans who would love to have Tomlin as the team's head coach some bad news.

Jets "don't want to fire" Aaron Glenn

"The Jets don’t want to fire Glenn," Hughes wrote. "That’s a major part of this. This isn’t the Robert Saleh situation, where he had to convince Woody Johnson he should keep his job. Johnson was looking for a reason to let him go. With Glenn, he needs to provide undeniable proof he should be let go."

Back in October 2024, Johnson shockingly fired Saleh roughly 48 hours after the Jets fell to 2-3 that season. Saleh previously went 18-33 across his first three campaigns as Jets head coach, but it was nevertheless surprising he didn't get more time to see if he could win in the fall of 2024.

That said, the Jets fell to 2-4 for the current campaign back on Oct. 18, and Glenn's overall record with the club is now 5-18. Additionally, the decision to hire Frank Reich as the club's offensive coordinator this past offseason has thus far gone poorly for Glenn.

"There’s evidence mounting against [Glenn], sure," Hughes continued. "The Jets' end-of-half dysfunction (outscored 100-6 in two seasons), unreadiness, and new staff that looks as bad as the old one (Frank Reich) aren’t feathers, but still, he’s going to get the benefit of the doubt."

Aaron Glenn's job security could change if...

The Jets next host the 0-5 Miami Dolphins this coming Sunday. As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had New York as a 4.5-point home favorite for that game. According to Hughes, conversations about Glenn's short-term future could change if the Jets fall to 2-5.

"Where I genuinely believe things take a stark turn against him is if the Jets lose to the Dolphins this weekend," Hughes added. "That team is bad – really bad. If they can’t beat them … the sky will start to fall."

Whether or not Glenn's players let such a fall commence could presumably impact Johnson's feelings on the Jets' current coaching situation.
