Packers' Luke Musgrave faces uncertain future after Matt LaFleur's troubling update

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur offered a sobering update on Luke Musgrave’s recovery, suggesting the tight end is unlikely to return during the 2026 season while leaving open a small possibility of a late comeback.

Asked whether he expects Musgrave to play this season, LaFleur was blunt about the uncertainty surrounding the fourth-year player, according to Matt Froehlich, "Pack-A-Day Podcast" co-host.

“It's tough to say right now. Until proven otherwise, I would say no, but I would never close the door on that,” LaFleur said.

The comments represent a concerning development for Musgrave, who has been sidelined by a neck injury since the beginning of training camp. Green Bay placed him on the physically unable to perform list to start the season, leaving him unavailable for at least the opening four games.

The situation has become increasingly difficult to predict. In September, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed hope that Musgrave would recover in time to play this season. LaFleur’s latest assessment, however, suggests the team is preparing for the possibility that the tight end will not return at all in 2026.

Packers have options at tight end, but Musgrave's future remains unclear

Musgrave’s absence is particularly significant because of the athletic traits that made him an intriguing prospect when Green Bay selected him in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. His speed and receiving potential offered the Packers another way to attack defenses, although injuries have disrupted his development.

Green Bay has added depth at the position, including veteran Jonnu Smith, while Tucker Kraft remains an important part of the team's plans. Those options give the Packers alternatives if Musgrave cannot return, reducing the pressure to rush him back.

Still, the priority should be Musgrave’s long-term health. A neck injury requires caution, and LaFleur’s comments offer no basis for predicting a recovery timetable or assuming the player will be able to return to football soon.

There is also a contract question looming. Musgrave is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2026 season, meaning the injury could complicate his future with Green Bay. The Packers will have to weigh his potential against the uncertainty surrounding his availability as they consider their longer-term tight end plans.

For now, LaFleur has not ruled out a return. But his wording makes clear that Musgrave’s availability should not be treated as an expectation.

Unless the tight end makes significant progress, Green Bay may have to look beyond the remainder of this season when evaluating what comes next for a player whose early NFL career has yet to unfold as hoped.
