James Madison's College Football Playoff hopes all but dead after stunning loss to Appalachian State

Entering Week 8, the James Madison Dukes were undefeated and one of the top candidates to reach the College Football Playoff as the Group of Six representative.

That all changed late Thursday night, though, as JMU suffered a stunning 34-31 overtime loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers that will greatly impact its chances to reach the CFP in back-to-back seasons.

JMU will now need some help to get in

As the AP rankings stood ahead of Thursday, JMU was just outside of the Top 25, ranking 29th, as it was receiving the fourth-most votes. That was the second-highest ranked Group of Six team, eight spots behind No. 21 Boise State.

The long advantage the Dukes had was their undefeated record, something that is now gone after Thursday's shocking loss. The loss was a major blow, and with Boise State being a 13.5-point favorite on Saturday, JMU will likely fall even further back with the season being closer to the end than it is the beginning.

Analyzing the Group of 6 picture

So, with the loss from JMU, Boise State is now the clear favorite to be the highest ranked Group of Six team and earn a berth into CFP. That isn't set it stone yet, as there are still a few teams that have a chance if they continue to play well.

In the AP poll, New Mexico and Oregon State are the next two highest-ranked Group of Six teams, but each of those teams still have extremely tough games. The tough games for New Mexico will come on Saturday at home against North Dakota State (6-1) and in Week 13 against Air Force (5-1).

Oregon State's toughest test will come in Week 11 on the road against Boise State (5-1). Outside of that game, Oregon State has a better record than anyone on its remaining schedule.

The remaining weeks will be incredible

For true, hardcore college football fans, watching the final six weeks of the season for the Group of Six teams play out will be an incredible sight to watch.

Boise State is the favorite as things stand, but if this college football season has shown anything, then chaos should be expected throughout the remainder of the year.
