NASCAR is at its best when the drivers are allowed to have a "boys have it" approach to handling conflict, but there are still lines that drawn in the sand that should not be crossed.
One of those is hitting a fellow driver at speed under caution, which is exactly what Zane Smith did to Carson Hocevar at the conclusion of Sunday's Freeway Insurance 500 at Phoenix Raceway.
NASCAR fined Smith $50,000 on Tuesday.
Smith has a history with Hocevar. The two tangled at Chicagoland on July 5 and were given a talking-to in the NASCAR hauler the following week.
.@ZaneSmith SLAMS @CarsonHocevar after the checkered flag, as the dislike between these two continues. Smith is told that the No. 77 team says they were shoved into the No. 38 a few laps before the finish. Zane’s response: “I don’t give a f*ck.” #NASCAR https://t.co/tlZXgIeb5s

Smith and Hocevar made contact late in Sunday's race, and while Smith was told that Hocevar was pushed into him, he did not care and retaliated after the checkered flag anyway.
Not only did Smith cost himself $50,000 two days later, but he also cost his team by damaging an otherwise relatively clean race car. There's also a risk in hitting a driver with such speed disparity in NASCAR's Next-Gen car, which is a stiffer car than prior generations and has contributed to several major injuries suffered by drivers over the years.
Drivers should be allowed to handle disputes themselves, but when disputes cross the line into driver safety, NASCAR has to draw a clear line and did so by punishing Smith on Tuesday.
