Before the Los Angeles Rams suffered a 27-7 Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, this past September, Rams head coach Sean McVay and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made it known via their words and actions that they weren't thrilled about having "to go 19 hours away to play a game" that counted in the standings.
It sounds like NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was unmoved by how McVay and Shanahan felt about participating in that international contest.
"We look at the Australia game as a tremendous success on really every level," Goodell recently said, as Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk shared on Thursday.
While the 49ers made their trip to Australia a week before the game to adjust to the time difference, McVay had his club arrive roughly 28 hours before kickoff. After a story mentioned that the Rams "seemed to approach the Australia trip with the excitement of a teenager asked to take out the trash," McVay said that "we’re not playing in Australia ever again, I hope."
For what it's worth, McVay later poked fun at himself and admitted that sometimes "a dumba-- coach...makes travel plans that puts you in bad spots." Goodell may or may not have taken a shot at McVay during his comments.
"We learn something from every game and every event," Goodell continued. "It was a longer trip, of course. The teams took different approaches — I think we learned something from that, too."
It's no secret that the NFL's long-term plan is for every team to play at least one game overseas each season. Based on Goodell's comments, one could assume that Australia hosting an NFL regular-season game is going to become an annual occurrence.
"To get 100,000 people on a Friday morning at 10:30 is pretty remarkable," Goodell said about the Rams-49ers game that was scheduled to benefit American television audiences. "I think it shows the passion — I think in all of Australia, I’ve never seen a region or country that had more of a passion for sports, and I think that was demonstrated."
