Barcelona vs. Real Madrid: 'El Clasico' told through six vintage matches

Barcelona is set to host Real Madrid, its famous domestic rival, on Sunday, Oct. 25 at its Camp Nou stadium. It's arguably the biggest game of the young 2026-27 European soccer season, and it comes cloaked in over a century of controversy.

Known around the world as el clasico, the Barcelona-Real Madrid rivalry is one of the greatest (and fiercest) in global sport. Here's the story of how it got there, told through six vintage matches that defined Spanish soccer as we know it:

1935: Barcelona 5-0 Real Madrid

This match isn't where el clasico began — Barcelona and Real Madrid had been battling it out for several decades already — but it is where it blossomed into a cultural touchstone.

With Europe torn apart by the rise of fascism, Spain found itself at a crossroads. The nation was split between left-leaning supporters of the existing government and right-leaning supporters of General Francisco Franco's military Spanish State. Franco, who would seize power in Spain in the near future, was an avid Madrid supporter. He allowed Barcelona to keep playing during his regime because he knew Madrid wouldn't be as powerful without a rival to vanquish; Barcelona, therefore, as one of the only leftist institutions left standing under his rule, would go on to become an important symbol of Spanish revolt.

While it's reductive to paint Barcelona as purely left-wing and Real Madrid as purely right-wing during Spain's conflict, the truth is that their fans and owners did largely fall along those cultural lines — lending the clasico extra weight during this period of chaos.

Those cultural lines would frizzle and snap in 1936 with the explosion of the Spanish Civil War, but here, at Barcelona's Camp Les Corts in the spring of 1935, the tension was thick and simmering. Barcelona, four years out from its last victory over Madrid, pulled together a stunning 5-0 win that galvanized its leftist supporters at a time when they really needed it. 5-0 would go on to become a calling card for Barcelona in clasico matches; we'll see that scoreline appear again in the future.

1960: Real Madrid 3-1 Barcelona

Most clasicos take place in Spain's La Liga, but this one — the first leg of a two-legged semifinal — took place in the early days of the Champions League. Madrid would go on to win the tie 6-2 on aggregate on the back of twin 3-1 victories. This first leg, though, was its bravura performance, and it featured goals from two Madrid legends in their prime: Argentina's Alfredo di Stefano and Hungary's Ferenc Puskas. di Stefano terrorized Barcelona in clasicos for a full decade; Puskas scored goals so beautiful that global soccer's annual award for the best goal of all is named in his honor.

2002: Barcelona 0-0 Real Madrid

When does a 0-0 stalemate become an all-time classic? When a legendary player like Portuguese attacker Luis Figo gets a severed pig's head thrown at him by angry Barcelona fans, that's when.

Figo, a Barcelona legend in the late 90s, made the controversial decision to leave the club for Real Madrid in 2000—something that just 38 senior players have done in over a century. Barcelona's fans weren't shy about expressing their anger, and while the pig's head is the projectile that lives on in infamy, they also threw bottles, lighters and more colorful Catalan curses than you could imagine. It's a wonder Figo made it out of there in one piece.

2007: Barcelona 3-3 Real Madrid

Argentine attacker Lionel Messi made his senior Barcelona debut in 2004, but this clasico three years later was his unofficial coming-out party. He scored a hat trick — his first ever — that culminated in a cool-as-you-like extra-time equalizer to keep Barcelona from dropping points against its greatest rival. Messi would go on to score 62 hat tricks across all competitions in his storied career, but it all started with this one as a 19-year-old. (He's still knocking them back, too: he scored his most recent hat trick at age 38 for Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.)

2010: Barcelona 5-0 Real Madrid

This was complete and utter domination from start to finish, a chillingly complete performance from a Barcelona side in the midst of its greatest groove. It was also Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho's first clasico as a Real Madrid manager, and what a cursed clasico it was from his perspective.

"It is a historically bad result for us," Mourinho said after the match. "We played very, very badly and they were fantastic. We gifted them two goals that were bordering on the ridiculous. It is our own fault."

While the players from this match have all turned over, Mourinho is back in charge of Madrid — and this weekend's clasico will be his chance to get revenge for this generational beat-down from 16 years ago.

2024: Real Madrid 3-2 Barcelona

Barcelona's world-beating team dominated the clasico throughout the 2010s, but the 2020s have seen considerably more balance in the fixture. This game, a breathless, heart-in-mouth league match from the spring of 2024, showed just how close the two teams are — and just how decisive Madrid can be when it's on point. English attacker Jude Bellingham won this clasico in extra time with a cool finish; he and his Madrid teammates would go on to win the European championship a few weeks later too.
