Cowboys' Jerry Jones seems to agree with Brian Schottenheimer 'elite' label

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer raised eyebrows and generated headlines when he said during a Friday morning appearance on Dallas sports radio station 105.3 The Fan that he won't be giving up offensive play-calling duties because he believes he's "an elite play-caller."

Later in the morning, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones suggested during a 105.3 The Fan interview that he agrees with Schottenheimer's self-assessment.

Jerry Jones "very confident" that Brian Schottenheimer will get Cowboys' offense back on track

"I’m very confident," Jones said about Schottenheimer's ability to adjust after back-to-back defeats, per Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News. "I look at what Schotty’s about, his command of being the coordinator for years, his experience in this area. This is an area where he’s not short on experience."

Schottenheimer has served as an offensive coordinator for multiple NFL teams, and he held that role with the Cowboys from 2023 until he was promoted to head coach in January 2025. More recently, his supposed "greatest offense there is" was outperformed in the Cowboys' 24-16 upset loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 8 and in the 23-13 defeat at the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 18.

Jerry Jones doesn't seem close to firing Brian Schottenheimer

While Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones insisted this past Monday that he and Jerry Jones "absolutely" believe in Schottenheimer, Saad Yousuf of The Athletic later mentioned the coach as a hot-seat candidate. If Jerry Jones is thinking about potentially making a coaching change, he did all he could to hide it on Friday.

"He’s strong in this area," Jones added about Schottenheimer. "We have every reason to believe we’ll make the right kind of adjustments."

According to Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS, Jones also said he "feels good about the Cowboys' future with" Schottenheimer.

Yousuf noted that "Dallas doesn’t really do in-season coach firings...and there’s not a good interim coach candidate on staff anyway, so the chances are good that Schottenheimer at least rides this out for the season." As for Dallas' next game, the 2-4 Cowboys will play at a 2-4 Philadelphia Eagles side that will be without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts (blood clots) this coming Monday night.

One wonders what Jones will have to say about Schottenheimer if the Cowboys fall to 2-5 in front of a prime-time television audience.
