Jayson Tatum claims he was blindsided when the Boston Celtics traded longtime teammate Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers. Brown isn't buying it.
After Tatum posted a video describing his surprised reaction to news of the blockbuster deal, Brown responded with a "cap" emoji. That one tiny image shows there's no love lost between Brown and his former team, who will meet at least four times this season.
There's a lot of history between the Celtics and the 76ers, dating back to the 60s, when the teams met in the playoffs five straight years, with the Celtics taking four of the series. Wilt Chamberlain battled Bill Russell, Julius Erving went up against Larry Bird in the 80s and Paul Pierce defeated Allen Iverson in a 2002 series.
Last year, the 76ers came back from a 3-1 series deficit to upset the Celtics in the first round and avenge two earlier defeats by Boston. Then they added Brown and signed LeBron James, who has beaten the Celtics the last five times he's faced them in the postseason. Both teams have title aspirations, which puts them on a collision course.
Now Brown has essentially called Tatum a liar on social media. The "cap" emoji indicates someone is lying, as opposed to the older meaning of "capping" as making fun of someone. Brown clearly didn't believe Tatum was truly unaware of the trade before allegedly being informed by ESPN's Shams Charania after an offseason workout.
Jayson Tatum was in Vegas when he learned that Jaylen Brown was traded:

“You traded him down the street?”
He then discussed their legacy:
“When it was time to go to war, I looked to my left & my right and No. 7 was there, I knew that he was going to do whatever it took for us” pic.twitter.com/Xl7AOovf0g
Ultimately, we'll never know if Tatum truly did know Brown was going to be traded, though Celtics president Brad Stevens told reporters back in July that he hadn't talked to Tatum or any of his players about the deal.

What's important is that Brown clearly feels resentment towards his old teammate, and likely his old team as well. Brown spent 10 seasons in Boston before this summer's trade and won a title. Now he's been discarded after a season where he was made the All-NBA Second Team and led the team to a 56-26 record, mostly without Tatum.
The Celtics-Sixers rivalry was always going to be fierce this season. The social media sniping only ramps it up more. The two teams meet for the first time Nov. 10 in Philadelphia. It should be an intense game.
No cap.
