College football delivered another wild Saturday, and the latest round of games has shaken up the rankings heading into Week 9. With seven teams in the AP Top 25 taking losses, there was lots of movement to sort through as prediction models tried to figure out who's actually earned their spot.
ESPN's College Football Power Index (FPI), a computer-based model, is among those taking another look at the pecking order. After a weekend that turned the rankings upside down, the model has reshuffled its top 25, and there's a new team inside the top three.
Ohio State still sits at No. 1 in the FPI rankings, even after sitting out Saturday's action. The Buckeyes have a few things to figure out before their next game, though, especially at quarterback following Julian Sayin's shoulder injury. They'll need to get that situation working out fast if they want to keep standout Jeremiah Smith involved and stay on track for the College Football Playoff.
Notre Dame also held steady at No. 2 despite also sitting out this past weekend. The Irish have some work to do after losing to BYU the week before, and they don't have many other big wins on their resume to make up for it. Navy is next up, giving Notre Dame a chance to get back on track before a more challenging teams comes at them.
The biggest move near the top of the FPI rankings belongs to Miami, which climbed one spot to No. 3. Malachi Toney had a historic against Pitt. By the end of the game, he recorded 16 receptions, 194 receiving yards and three touchdowns. That's major stuff and it helped his team walk out of there with a 7-0 record.
