Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 in the first clasico of the 2026-27 season.
Madrid's Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 41st minute, but Barcelona winger Raphinha equalized in the 61st after a clever short corner. It took a stellar one-two run from Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga and Arda Guler — and another Mbappé goal — to seal the game in Madrid's favor in the 87th minute.
The win ends Barcelona's perfect start to the 2026-27 La Liga season and pulls Madrid within three points of its storied rival.
Here are the key takeaways from a typically tense clasico:
The clasico is global soccer's most-watched domestic fixture, and that level of exposure — coupled with its historical significance in Spain — loads it with gravity. It's always refreshing, then, to be reminded that there is still entertainment underneath all of that infamy.
This edition of the clasico was more entertaining than most. Madrid's opening goal came after Barcelona defender Gerard Martin banged a clearance off of Mbappé and into his own net; even Mbappé couldn't help but giggle over the sheer misfortune of it all. Barcelona's second-half equalizer was equally silly, a short corner shot that Raphinha threaded perfectly through dignified, serious Jude Bellingham's legs as if he were a cartoon.
The hero of the game was Madrid defender Marc Cucurella , and he earned that distinction not by scoring a key goal but by finding dozens of novel ways to tug Lamine Yamal to the ground without earning a yellow card for his troubles. He was the People's Prince in this match, and his performance mirrored the clasico beautifully: committed, high-quality and desperately funny in kind.
Barcelona phenom Lamine Yamal struggled to shake off Cucurella and found himself physically overpowered for much of the clasico. When he did break through into Madrid's penalty area, he fizzed most of his shots wide, unable to find the target and unwilling to square the ball for his teammates on the opposite flank. It was far from a vintage performance from the young star.

Against Madrid, Yamal looked like exactly what he is: a breathtakingly talented 19-year-old who still has plenty of development ahead of him. It'd be churlish to accuse him of being overhyped, but it'd be equally churlish to pretend like he had his best possible clasico when he clearly found it difficult to perform.
Mbappé's first goal in this clasico may have been a fortuitous bounce courtesy of Martin, but his second — a game winner off of Camavinga's stunning assist — was as decisive and intentional as goals come. It was also Mbappé's 100th goal for Madrid in just 116 appearances. What a record ... and what a perfect place to set it.

Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia doesn't steal many headlines, but he's quietly morphed into one of global soccer's most reliable shot-stoppers. He was on fire Sunday, keeping Madrid's lightning-fast attack at bay while his defenders were busy holding a dangerous high line, and neither of Madrid's goals on the night were his fault.
His opposite number, Madrid's Andriy Lunin, looked equally strong. He came into the game unexpectedly after starting keeper Thibaut Courtois fell ill. If Lunin felt shaky in his first start of the 2026-27 season, he certainly didn't show it, and casual viewers would be forgiven for assuming he was Madrid's go-to goalie.
