Vikings offense will need to step up to continue perfect start

The Minnesota Vikings are the NFL's last undefeated team, but their perfect record is hiding a significant offensive problem. At 6-0, Minnesota has scored just 125 points, one of the lowest totals in league history for a team to win its first six games.

The statistic places the 2026 Vikings at the bottom of the list among teams that started 6-0 since 2000. Minnesota's total trails the 133 points scored by the 2009 Denver Broncos, while the 2015 Broncos and 2024 Kansas City Chiefs also recorded comparatively low totals during their unbeaten starts, according to Pro Football Reference stats.

The broader historical context makes the number even more striking. Since 1950, only the 1978 Rams scored fewer points through a 6-0 start, with 116. The 1973 Vikings also scored 125, matching this year's team.

Minnesota has reached this position through defense, timely plays and an ability to win close games rather than overwhelming opponents offensively.

Vikings defense is keeping the perfect record alive

Sunday's 16-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts illustrated the formula. Minnesota struggled to generate offense for much of the afternoon before quarterback Kyler Murray produced a crucial 35-yard scramble late in the third quarter. He then connected with tight end T.J. Hockenson for a touchdown to give the Vikings their first lead.

The defense finished the job, helping Minnesota preserve its unbeaten record and move to 6-0. The unit has allowed only 74 points through six games, an average of 12.3 per contest — the lowest total in the NFL.

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores has built a unit capable of creating pressure and forcing opposing quarterbacks into difficult decisions. Against Indianapolis, the Vikings blitzed on 85.2% of Daniel Jones' dropbacks, the highest single-game blitz rate recorded in the Next Gen Stats era, which dates to 2016.

That approach has given Minnesota a reliable foundation even when the offense cannot sustain drives or consistently reach the end zone.

Can Minnesota's offense keep up?

The concern is that the Vikings cannot expect their defense to rescue them every week. Minnesota has scored fewer than 20 points in three games and has recorded only 10 touchdowns, the fewest by a 6-0 team since the 1933 Chicago Bears.

Murray has shown flashes of playmaking ability, but the offense has lacked consistency. Against the Colts, the Vikings struggled to move the ball before Murray's late third-quarter run changed the momentum. Penalties and missed opportunities also threatened to derail their comeback.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell remains confident that the unit can improve, saying after the victory that he believes the offense is not far from finding its rhythm.

That optimism will soon face a major test. Minnesota's upcoming schedule includes matchups against the Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers. Those opponents should provide a much clearer picture of whether the Vikings can maintain their perfect start against stronger competition.

Minnesota deserves credit for winning every game so far, and its defensive performance is no fluke. But the low scoring total is a warning sign: if the offense does not improve, the margin for error will shrink considerably.

The Vikings have put themselves in an enviable position at 6-0. Whether they can turn that start into a genuine Super Bowl push may depend on how quickly their offense catches up with their defense.
