Colin Cowherd has devastating criticism of Lincoln Riley's USC

It has certainly not been the season that the USC Trojans and head coach Lincoln Riley were anticipating.

Many expected the Trojans to be a championship contender. At the very least, this was supposed to be the season that Riley finally got USC into the College Football Playoff.

There's still time for somewhat of a turnaround, but it seems more likely than not that USC will not be making the CFP after a demoralizing 24-7 road loss to the Wisconsin Badgers in Week 8.

USC still has to play No. 2 Ohio State, No. 4 Indiana and No. 7 UCLA this season (not to mention a Maryland team that could be on a bounceback mission post Mike Locksley).

With the way USC played against Wisconsin, there's a chance the Trojans lose out and finish 6-6. Even if Maryland is a win, a 7-5 season is still on the table, and that would be incredibly disappointing.

Frankly, Riley's whole tenure in Southern California has been disappointing. With the loss, he's dropped to 41-20 as head coach of the Trojans, which is a winning percentage of just .672. Even worse, Riley is only 5-15 against ranked opponents at USC. That's an abysmal winning percentage of .250.

That has led some who used to support Riley to the conclusion that he's simply not going to work out with the Trojans.

One of those people would be Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports.

“I thought Steve Sarkisian was going to work at USC. I thought Lane Kiffin was going to work at USC. I thought Lincoln Riley was going to work at USC. None have,” Cowherd said on Monday (h/t On3). “Losing to Wisconsin, a solid, not spectacular team, and scoring seven points is bad.”

Colin Cowherd calls USC Trojans soft

It's not just the loss to Wisconsin, which is having a decent season at 5-2 and 3-1 in Big Ten play.

As Cowherd sees it, USC's problem has more to do with the culture of the football program than anything.

Riley has always been known as an offensive mastermind, and we've seen signs of that at USC over the years. The Trojans aren't tough under Riley, though, and they just can't seem to "get up" for the big moments.

That's a culture thing, per Cowherd. He thinks the Trojans are soft.

“They’ve been pretty damn good, but on the road, soft doesn’t travel, and Wisconsin was another example," Cowherd said. "When they get in a crisis, they get bullied, they get pushed around. I feel like sometimes watching Lincoln Riley’s offense, it’s like watching somebody that has a really nice convertible, and it’s 28 degrees out. It just doesn’t work.”

Riley's style of play might have kept working in the Pac-12, but a lack of toughness or intestinal fortitude certainly doesn't work in the Big Ten.

Looking ahead at the stretch of games USC has coming up, there's a chance Riley and the Trojans may find that out the hard way.
