Perhaps Nicolas Cage should've signed on for "National Treasure 3" instead of the upcoming John Madden biopic.
Academy Award winner Cage is set to star as the NFL icon in Amazon's "Madden," which releases on Prime Video on Nov. 18. Casting him was a controversial choice. It's hard to envision the actor who plays H.I. "Hi" McDunnough in the 1987 comedy "Raising Arizona" nailing the role.
To win over skeptics, Amazon released a sneak peek on Tuesday night. It will convince practically no one that he's well-suited to play Madden.
The 38-second clip shows Cage — costumed as Madden — diagramming plays on his telestrator during a broadcast. We'll give him an A for effort, but he doesn't sound like the legendary coach and broadcaster.

If you're too young to remember Madden, take a listen to this clip.

Madden's voice thundered and sounded authoritative, perfect for an NFL broadcaster. Cage's voice isn't that. It's gravelly and sounds like he's jabbering. NFL pundits immediately pointed it out on social media after hearing the clip.
"Nicolas Cage's John Madden voice is literally just Nicolas Cage," wrote Ryan Talbot of Syracuse.com. "This is going to be one of those movies that is so bad that it's good, I can tell."

Amazon doesn't want to hear that. The studio hoped Talbot would say we might have an early Best Picture contender at the Academy Awards. Sadly for Amazon, that was one of the kinder comments.
"This is going to be a shame," wrote Pro Football Talk's admin while reacting to the clip.

Wait until the movie drops before reviewing it. Perhaps it'll surprise. That said, the film hinges on Cage's performance. If the clip is any indication, it may be far from great.
Cage should've called comedian Frank Caliendo. He does an excellent Madden impersonation and could've given the actor some tips. He clearly needed some. He sounds nothing like him.
