While the Dallas Cowboys improved to 3-4 on the season via their 38-21 win over the rival Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, Cowboys legend and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman was among those who weren't all that impressed by how the Dallas defense performed at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers in late September, and Porter produced a solid outing in Monday's win. During a Tuesday morning appearance on Dallas sports radio station 105.3 The Fan, Jones suggested that he views Porter as more than a one-season rental.
Specifically, Jon Machota of The Athletic shared that Jones referred to Porter as "a shutdown corner."
"He’s got it," Jones added about Porter. "He’s got the physical skills. He’s the kind of corner that ultimately they don’t want to go to that side. When you get one of those, that’s everybody’s dream."
Porter is betting on himself and playing for the Cowboys on the final season of his existing contract. Meanwhile, Dallas wide receiver George Pickens had his rights for 2026 retained via the franchise tag. It remains to be seen whether Jones can afford to and will want to keep both Porter and Pickens, but it seems as if Jones is ready to pay Porter in a big way.
While ESPN stats show that Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott began Tuesday tied for third in the NFL with 273 pass attempts for the season, the Dallas rushing attack made things difficult for the Eagles throughout Monday evening. Cowboys running back Javonte Williams accumulated 155 rushing yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, and Dallas went for 204 yards on the ground as a team.
"That lets us have the opportunity to get Dak under center a lot more," Jones said about his desire for the Cowboys to be a run-first team, per Machota. "That presents a different defensive challenge for the opponent if he can get under center a lot."
Throughout October, Jones teased that he could and would make another move ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline to bolster the club's defense. On Tuesday morning, he sang somewhat of a different tune.
"If we could do it where we sit right now, I would add to it," Jones explained, per Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys' website. "But the adding to it is a big statement. It's unlikely we'll get the opportunity from outside coming in. But if it's there, I'll do it."
Perhaps Jones learned that the Las Vegas Raiders won't be trading pass-rusher Maxx Crosby this fall. As for those who will be on the Cowboys roster, they will spend this week preparing for the Nov. 1 home game against the 2-5 Arizona Cardinals.
Shortly after Jones' segment ended, DraftKings Sportsbook had Dallas as a six-point home favorite over Arizona.
