Through the first four weeks of the 2026 season, the Mississippi State Bulldogs looked like they were going to be a handful.
Led by star quarterback Kamario Taylor, the Bulldogs were an early-season surprise and Taylor looked like one of the best quarterbacks in college football.
All of that momentum and excitement has come to a screeching halt in recent weeks, and the remainder of Mississippi State's season now has a bleak outlook.
According to ESPN's college football insider Pete Thamel, Taylor will miss the rest of the season, as he is likely set to undergo surgery on a toe injury he suffered several weeks back against Alabama.
The toe injury has lingered with Taylor for several weeks and caused him to exit early against Alabama, miss the next game against LSU and leave early against Oklahoma when he tried to return and play.
According to Thamel, Taylor pushed to play through the injury, but it was ultimately decided that he was not healing properly and Mississippi State decided to shut his season down.

The aforementioned excellent four-week start for the Bulldogs was largely in part to Taylor and his stellar play. Through four weeks, he'd thrown for 1,192 yards with 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
He'd also rushed for 185 yards with one touchdown. He was playing some of the best football of any quarterback in the country and was among the Heisman favorites in the early part of the season.

After his stellar start to the season, Taylor captivated the attention of the college football world. Consider today's college football landscape with the transfer portal and NIL that sparked conversations about Taylor's future with Mississippi State.
He remained adamant that he was a Mississippi kid through-and-through and that he would be back in a Bulldogs uniform next season.
That will be something to keep an eye on at the end of the season. If he indeed does return to Mississippi State, the Bulldogs will enter 2027 with one of the top quarterbacks in the country who can lead them to a win on any given Saturday.
