Justin Jefferson has healthy attitude about his low production amid Vikings' 6-0 start

Justin Jefferson certainly wishes his numbers would look a lot better, but the number he's most focused on right now is the six by the Minnesota Vikings in the standings.

The Vikings are 6-0, and they're the only undefeated team in the NFL heading into a Week 8 NFC North clash with the Detroit Lions.

It's been a great run for Minnesota, but Jefferson has seen his numbers look uncharacteristically small. He's caught just 23 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

For reference, in 2024, he caught 33 passes for 531 yards and five touchdowns in six games. Jefferson was an All-Pro and Offensive Player of the Year candidate in 2024. He had a down year last season, but Minnesota also struggled with inconsistent quarterback play. One can make the case that that's also been Jefferson's problem in 2026 as he tries to get used to Kyler Murray.

The Vikings are indeed 6-0, though, so something has to be working, right? That's how Jefferson views it. He's not sweating the stats, and he's happy winning football games.

"I definitely would love winning games over having that production," Jefferson said, per Kevin Seifert of ESPN. "There was definitely years before where I had that production and was not winning games. So it's definitely an in-between feeling on, you want to be the best player in the league, and you want to have that production to show you are the best player in the league, but we're winning games and we're the only team undefeated in the league."

Minnesota Vikings must get Justin Jefferson more involved

It's also worth noting that Jefferson has been banged up this season. He's missed one game and most of another due to a sprained left ankle. The Vikings have also had a bye this season, so there are reasons that those numbers don't look as good.

It's not just that Jefferson isn't playing well or that Murray isn't giving him opportunities. He's second on the team in targets (31) to tight end T.J. Hockenson (32). Leaguewide, though, 71 players have more targets than Jefferson this season, as Seifert notes.

One would imagine head coach Kevin O'Connell will want to change that as the Vikings head into the meat of their 2026 schedule.

O'Connell is trying to deploy a ball-control offense and lean on Minnesota's elite defense, though, so things look a bit different than they used to.

"In the past we were throwing the ball a thousand times," O'Connell said on Wednesday, specifically speaking about Jefferson's lack of production. "That's one thing. When you lead the league or you're close to in rushing attempts on the early downs, controlling the game or attempting to control the game, there may not be just the amount of volume [of throws]. But he's our best player. We've got to find a way to continue to activate him."
