Christian Watson details gritty return to Packers' 'TNF' win over Panthers after breaking rib, spitting up blood

One of the more dramatic scenes of the 2026 NFL season played out at Lambeau Field during Thursday night's game between the Green Bay Packers and the Carolina Panthers when Packers wide receiver Christian Watson suffered a chest injury in the contest's second quarter that left him needing to be taken to the hospital.

Watson later shockingly returned to the stadium and then caught two more passes in what became a 27-19 Packers win that improved them to 5-3 on the season. Following the victory, fans learned more about Watson's injury.

Christian Watson did not want to end the game at the hospital

As shared by ESPN's Rob Demovsky and Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Watson coughed up blood and had an X-ray determine that he broke a rib when he completed a 53-yard catch with 9:11 left in the game's second quarter.

"I was spitting up some blood or something like that, so the doctor said I had to go get a CT," Watson explained. "I was trying to beg him to not make me do that. I got a rib, that’s all, but the other stuff was good. No internal bleeding, nothing like that."

Watson said he thought the injury was the result of coming "down on the ball or my elbow or something" while making the 53-yard grab. Fans watching the Amazon Prime Video broadcast or listening to radio commentary were likely surprised that he was listed as questionable after he was transported to the hospital. It turns out Watson was anxious to get back onto the field even before he was cleared to do so.

"Before I even left [the hospital], I wanted to go back out there," Watson said. "This means everything to me, to be out there on the football field. I’ve had injuries I was not able to go on the field for, and I’ve missed significant time due to injuries, so any chance I get to go out there on the football field, I’m going to be out there on the football field."

Christian Watson praised for resiliency, grit after playing through injury

The two catches for 13 yards that Watson tallied after making his incredible return resulted in the 27-year-old finishing the win with team highs of eight receptions and 113 receiving yards. Few would have blamed Watson had he stayed out through the remainder of Thursday's game after he went down, but he instead became responsible for what Packers safety Xavier McKinney referred to as an "incredible" story.

"I think it shows resiliency, I think it shows toughness and I think it just shows the love that he has for this team," McKinney said about Watson. "He had his 100 yards [before the injury], and he could've just sat it. But the fact that he wasn't satisfied and the fact that he felt like and he knew that we still needed him out there and he still said, 'OK, I love this team, and I want to be able to go out here for this team and do that,' that gains our respect."

Watson will now have some extra time to rest and recover before Green Bay plays at the New England Patriots on Nov. 8. It's far too early to say on Oct. 30 whether or not he'll be good to go for that matchup, but Thursday's events would lead one to believe he'll be in the lineup that Sunday.

"The grit to go back in the game," Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said about Watson. "He had a heck of a night. I can't imagine what he would have had, had he not missed so much time."
