Canadiens' Cole Caufield continues to be a game-changer in overtime

The Montreal Canadiens erased an early two-goal deficit against the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night, earning a 5-4 overtime win.

The hero in overtime was the same player it usually is for the Canadiens -- forward Cole Caufield.

Caufield is not just one of the best goal-scorers in the NHL, he remains one of the best goal-scorers in big moments.

He is clutch. Very clutch.

Another game-winning goal for Canadiens' Cole Caufield

Caufield's overtime goal on Thursday was his 11th goal of the season (putting him on a 57-goal pace for the season), and already his third game-winning goal.

He led the NHL with 12 game-winning goals a year ago.

But those game-winning goals are not just game-winners scored in regulation, he is also a nearly unstoppable force when the game gets to overtime, with Thursday's goal already being the 15th overtime goal of his career.

That represents 8.8 percent of his career regular-season goal total (180).

A lot of it is the simple fact he's just a great goal-scorer. But he also seems especially built for 3-on-3 overtime give his speed and offensive instincts. Giving a player like him, with his shot and his vision, that much extra time and space in a wide-open environment is going to produce great results.

He is built for it, and he takes advantage of it.

His goal total has improved every season he has been in the NHL, and given the way his 2026-27 season has started he looks to be on track to do it again.
