Week 9 of the NFL season is set to feature plenty of starting quarterbacks standing on the sideline and not playing.
The NFL has once again undergone a rash of injuries. On Thursday, Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Kyler Murray is week-to-week with sore hamstring, which means Carson Wentz will start on Monday night against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.
In total, seven quarterbacks who began the year as backups or on the practice squad are set to be their team's starter in Week 9: J.J. McCarthy (New York Giants), Carson Wentz (Minnesota Vikings), Joe Fagnano (Baltimore Ravens), Shedeur Sanders (Cleveland Browns), Joe Milton (Philadelphia Eagles), Drew Lock (Seattle Seahawks) and Gardner Minshew (Arizona Cardinals).
It did not work out well for Fagnano and the Ravens on "Thursday Night Football."
McCarthy was traded by the Vikings to the Giants earlier in the season, and he sat behind Jameis Winston before John Harbaugh named McCarthy the team's starter.
Minshew sat behind Jacoby Brissett, but Minshew stepped in during the Week 8 game and has now taken over the QB1 job. Brissett was then traded to the Ravens on Wednesday, although the final terms are still being discussed. Milton began the year with the Dallas Cowboys, but Jalen Hurts' blood clot issue forced the team to start Tanner McKee, and Milton will make his first start for the Eagles in Week 9. Both Sanders and Lock are filling in this week with Deshaun Watson and Sam Darnold not available.
The influx of backups taking the field should make for some interesting quarterback play in Week 9.
