Former Baylor HC Dave Aranda may be heading back to LSU Tigers

Former Baylor Bears head coach Dave Aranda may not be out of work for long.

Aranda rose to prominence in college football for his defensive coordinator skills. He led the defense for the Wisconsin Badgers from 2013 to 2015 and then had the same role with the LSU Tigers from 2016 to 2019.

He coached under Les Miles and Ed Orgeron at LSU and was also the Tigers' associate head coach. He won the championship with LSU, and that furthered his rise up the college football ranks. He was hired in January 2020 to lead Baylor. Aranda coached for seven seasons at Baylor, but the Bears fired him after two straight losses to TCU and Kansas. He left Waco with a perfectly average 40-40 record.

Aranda certainly wasn't a success story at Baylor, but that doesn't mean he doesn't still have immense value for his defensive mind. As such, it's not super surprising to hear that current LSU head coach Lane Kiffin may be trying to bring Aranda in as an analyst.

LSU Tigers could reunite Dave Aranda and Ed Orgeron

LSU's current defensive coordinator is Blake Baker, who was retained by Kiffin when he took over the program in December 2025. The Tigers are currently fourth in all of college football in total defense, giving up just 258.1 yards per game. Interestingly, they're 16th in scoring defense, giving up 16 points per game.

It's also interesting to note that if and when Aranda joins the Tigers, he'll be coaching alongside Orgeron again. The former LSU head coach currently works on Kiffin's staff as the special assistant to recruiting and defense.
