Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy in a move related to the 2024 car crash he was involved in.
Rice filed for bankruptcy in the Northern District of Texas bankruptcy court and claimed over $3.45 million in debts, per Nate Taylor and Michael Rothstein of ESPN. According to the filing, over $2.1 million of that is owed to plaintiffs who are in the process of suing him over the crash.
Rice claimed to have $677,054 in assets in the filing, including $421,825 in “deferred compensation.” Among his listed assets are his Super Bowl LVIII ring, which is valued at $160,000.
Most of this stems from Rice’s involvement in a hit-and-run case in Texas that took place in 2024. He initially faced eight felony charges over the incident, but later accepted a plea deal. He is still facing civil lawsuits from multiple victims, and he was suspended six games by the NFL for his role in the crash to start the 2025 campaign. The ESPN scribes also note that Rice is being sued by "an ex-girlfriend alleging he repeatedly assaulted her from 2023 to 2025."
Rice has 20 catches for 243 yards and two touchdowns in five games this season. He is currently in the final year of a four-year, $6.5 million rookie deal that he received upon being drafted in 2023.
