San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle had his proverbial tinfoil hat on Thursday while talking about Brandon Aiyuk.
The controversial wide receiver applied for reinstatement earlier this week after being placed on the 49ers’ reserve/did not report list. Aiyuk’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, revealed that he and his client planned to visit the team’s facility on Friday.
Kittle doesn’t think the Niners will roll out any scarlet red carpets for Aiyuk’s arrival. When asked Thursday if he was “looking forward to” seeing Aiyuk, Kittle threw a question back at Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn.
“Do you think he gets in the facility?” Kittle responded.
Cohn then asked Kittle the same question.
“Plead the fifth,” Kittle answered. “Yeah. You can ask [49ers GM John Lynch]. Or [head coach Kyle Shanahan]. Don’t ask me. I’m a conspiracy guy.”
When asked if Kittle believed there was indeed “a conspiracy” brewing, Kittle again exercised his Fifth Amendment rights.
It’s possible that Kittle was simply having some fun with the media as a self-described “conspiracy guy.” But his stance may also hint at how the 49ers view Aiyuk internally.
Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that he has mentally “moved on” from Aiyuk. But both he and Lynch may want to sit down with Aiyuk and Rosenhaus one last time before making anything definitive.
That is, if Aiyuk actually does get access to the building.
