Explosive UCLA offense shows why Bruins need to be taken seriously in Big Ten, CFP picture

Keep doubting the UCLA Bruins. They don't seem to mind.

On Saturday, UCLA, which was ranked No. 8 and behind a pair of two-loss SEC teams in 2026's first College Football Playoff rankings released last Tuesday, improved to 9-0 for the first time since 1998 with a 34-20 win at the Minnesota Golden Gophers (5-4, 3-3 in the Big Ten).

The Bruins were led by an explosive offense behind quarterback Ty Dieffenbach, who was making his first career road start after taking over for an injured Nico Iamaleava. Dieffenbach had a remarkable 303 passing yards on eight completions, including back-to-back 75-yard touchdowns in the second half to give his team separation on the scoreboard.

It was an impressive showing against Minnesota, which just one week ago pushed the defending champion Indiana Hoosiers to overtime in a road loss. As Fox Sports color commentator Joel Klatt pointedly said at the end of the win, "Let's hope the committee watched this game. I don't think the committee has watched a ton of football based on the rankings."

UCLA deserving of more credit improving to 9-0 in road win at Minnesota

Among the several gripes people justifiably had with the season's initial CFP rankings was UCLA's placement below No. 5 Alabama (7-2, 5-2 in SEC) and No. 7 Texas (7-2, 4-2 in SEC). With both those teams notching road wins over top 25 opponents in the committee's eyes on Saturday, the Bruins may not get much more respect in the upcoming standings,

But even if the voting members don't budge from their first impressions, UCLA may not need their approval. With the Big Ten title game champ earning an automatic bid, the Bruins may qualify for the CFP all by themselves.

Rather than fold in Iamaleava's absence, UCLA hasn't skipped a beat. Dieffenbach's performance against Minnesota was revelatory as he proved capable of overcoming adversity. After a third-quarter sack-fumble, the senior threw 75-yard touchdowns on consecutive passes, helping turn a 17-17 tie into a 31-20 advantage.

UCLA ends the season with games against Illinois (6-3, 4-2 in Big Ten), at Michigan (5-3, 2-3 in Big Ten) and No. 20 USC (7-2, 4-2 in Big Ten), not exactly a cakewalk as it tries to solidify a CFP berth. But the Bruins are past the point of being easily dismissed.

They're the best team in the Big Ten, which has won the past three national championships. The CFP committee might not give UCLA the respect it deserves, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't.
