After over a week of action-packed events at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo, the dust has settled, and the results are in. The week started with the PRCA Xtreme Bulls and Bronc matches, Jan. 26-27, and concluded with Rodeo Rapid City, Jan. 29-Feb. 3.
Clayton Sellars took the win in round one of the Xtreme Bulls on Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics' Bugatti with an 86-point ride. In the finals, however, it was Jeter Lawrence who stole the show with a huge 88-point ride on Sutton Pro Rodeo's Time Traveler. The average title was a knife fight but was ultimately taken home by Sellars as he was able to edge out Lawrence by just half a point with 173 points on two-head.
The Xtreme Bronc match saw some big scores from the competition as well. Leon Fountain on Burch Rodeo's Professional Lun and Q Taylor on Burch Rodeo's Little Lunatic tied for the win in round one with an 86.5. Muddy Creek Pro Rodeo's Bugsy came through in the finals and carried Brody Wells to an electric 89.5-point ride, the highest-scoring ride for the week.
The PRCA/WPRA-sanctioned Rodeo Rapid City started with the slack on Monday, Jan. 29, and carried through four performances ending on Saturday, Feb 3.
In the Bareback riding, no one was able to top the 3-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier, Leighton Berry, throughout the four performances with his 88.5-point ride on Summit Pro Rodeo's Game Trail. As the highest-paying event of the rodeo, Berry took $5,534 home to Weatherford, Texas, for his efforts.
Louisiana native Remey Parrot dominated the competition in steer wrestling and had a half-second lead on the rest of the field when all was said and done. He won the rodeo with a blistering 3.8-second run.
Coming into the last performance of the rodeo, a 4.0 was the time to beat in the team roping. Originally set by Hagen Peterson and Chase Tryan in the second performance, Nebraska Cowboys, Clay Bauer, and Butch Levell matched that time on Saturday night and tied for the win.
The match-up of the night did not disappoint; Allen Boore and Sutton Pro Rodeo's South Point closed out the saddle bronc riding and, to no one's surprise, took home the win with an 86.5-point ride. This is South Point's second year in a row to carry his cowboy to the win in Rapid City.
Monty Lewis was able to hold his lead from the slack round on Tuesday morning against the tough field in the tie-down roping and took home the win with an 8.4-second run.
Tayla Moeykens and KN Fames Best Yet, also known as Yeti, shut off the clock with a time of 13.26 seconds and captured the win in the barrel racing. The Montana Circuit Champion and the young Dash Ta Fame gelding were awarded close to $5,000 for their efforts.
Closing out the rodeo was the fan-favorite event of bull riding, where Jackson Ward and Burch Rodeo's Cookies and Cream marked an 87-point ride and were crowned the final champions of the night in Rapid City.
