Stetson Wright has been an accomplished member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 2018, earning eight World Championship titles in his career thus far.
Stetson released his decision in a statement via social media saying, "When I first had this injury, I said I would be back when I'm 100 percent. So, I'm going to stay true to myself because at the end of the day when you aren't ready you can't lie to yourself."
His 2023 injury was magnified in Round 2 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and, according to the PRCA, was surgically repaired in mid-December.
As a saddle bronc rider and bull rider, Stetson undergoes extreme physical wear during his events, so the decision to be fully healthy will pay out for him in the long run. News of Stetson's decision has definitely shocked the rodeo community, as many were given the impression that he would saddle up in 2024, once again.
In the beginning Stetson had made plans to make his comeback during the Reno, Nevada rodeo. Even though he was originally shown on the day sheets, Wright did not make an appearance.
The Utah native knows that recovery will take all of his effort, physically and mentally. There is no question that it has been difficult to sit on the sidelines watching others compete.
It is very clear through this cowboy's words and actions that he earned each one of his titles through serious dedication and love for the sport. Wright has named Denver, Colo. at the National Western Stock Show as his goal to return to the rodeo arena and start the 2025 season. There is no doubt when looking at his history that he will be doing everything in his power to kick up the dirt once more.
It will be a comeback worth the wait, and the rodeo community will undoubtedly welcome him back as though he never left. Stetson has a lot left in his tank, and his story is too great already to be overshadowed by this bump in the road.
