It's officially the end of ski season for a southern Oregon mountain.

After a "record-low" snow year and continuously adverse conditions, Mt. Ashland has made the tough decision to close for the season.

The ski area closed "until snow conditions improved" on February 28th, after continued warm temperatures and lack of snowfall. Unfortunately, those improved snow conditions never materialized at Mt. Ashland, and the ski area opted to cease winter operations for the season, announcing the decision on March 12, 2026.

In their closing announcement, Mt. Ashland noted that despite "unseasonably and unreasonably" warm temperatures, they were still grateful for the 17 days of skiing and seven Twilight nights they were able to open.

Mt. Ashland reports an annual average of "over 265 inches" of snow. To date, the ski area has recorded just 82 inches of snow this season.

Mt. Ashland's season pass has a 50-Day guarantee, which the mountain was not able to meet. As a result, returning Unlimited Season Pass holders will get a 33% discount and Twilight Season Pass holders will get a 24% discount during the mountain's Spring Season pass sale.

Mt. Ashland opened for the 2025/26 season in late December 2025, but closed again on January 1, due to forecasted rain and low snowpack. On January 7, the mountain reopened with limited terrain, but closed again on January 15th. At the time, Mt. Ashland's snowpack was 71% below average. As of the February 28th closure, the ski area had a 16" base, putting it at 27% of its annual snowpack, which averages more than 260".

The entire state of Oregon has seen a tough winter with similarly warm, wet conditions. Hoodoo Ski Area in Central Oregon has had a limited season due to low snowpack and flooding that temporarily shuttered the resort last month.

Further north, Mt. Bachelor, Mt. Hood Meadows, and Timberline Lodge have fared slightly better. Mt. Bachelor has gotten 160" of snow this season and was able to open their Summit Chair last weekend. Timberline Lodge has gotten 355" of snow this season, and Mt. Hood Meadows has gotten 217". These totals are still below average, as much of the western US fights for snowpack.

Temperatures across the state are forecast to rise over the next week, with highs reaching the high 40s and low 50s at ski areas.
