31-year-old Norweigian alpine ski racer Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, best known for his performances in Super-G and Downhill events, suffered a dislocated shoulder last January at the Lauberhorn races in Wengen. Kilde was airlifted off the site and is still dealing with the aftermath.

The ski racer reported feeling increased pain in his repaired shoulder over the last few weeks, which initially seemed like a normal reaction to upping his training and working his way back to professional-athlete-style workouts.

An Instagram post on July 31, 2024 revealed that the pain was actually the result of "an angry infection that has caused some damage", proving to be a setback in his journey towards shoulder rehabilitation.

Kilde explains that this setback means six weeks of IV antibiotics everyday through a PICC line that lives in his arm until the infection is all gone and the bone is back to normal.

PICC lines are similar to IVs (intravenous lines) but are thicker and designed to stay in place for longer periods of time--even for months--as opposed to IVs. PICC lines are inserted into a vein in the upper arm and then threaded through a large vein right above the heart.

Next steps for the racer's recovery process are on hold until the current situation reaches completion. Kilde ended his description of his situation in classic, graceful style, thanking everyone who is helping him through this challenging time.

"That’s that, quite a bummer, but we keep fighting. Stay tuned! I am so lucky and grateful to be surrounded by incredible, caring, brilliant people both at home and away. The team at Steadman has taken such good care of me. THANK YOU!!"
