American-born skier Eileen Gu wins gold for China in women's big air

Eileen Gu earned China its third goal of the 2022 Olympics when she won the women's freestyle skiing big air final.

Gu, 18, has been one of the more talked about athletes in the Winter Olympics due to her decision to represent China rather than the United States. Gu was born in San Francisco, but began representing her mother's native country of China in international competition in 2019.

"I am proud of my heritage, and equally proud of my American upbringings," Gu explained on social media when she made the decision. "The opportunity to help inspire millions of young people where my mom was born, during the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help to promote the sport I love. Through skiing, I hope to unite people, promote common understanding, create communication, and forge friendships between nations."

During her gold-medal winning run, Gu became the second woman to ever land a 1620 in competition.

Gu is also expected to be a medal favorite in slopestyle and halfpipe.
