Consistent seasonal snowfall has surely helped those plans. Since winter began, Mount Bohemia has received more than 300 inches of snow, which is well above average for the ski area.
Mount Bohemia is open on Saturdays and Sundays this month. The same would apply to May, should the ski area make it that far. On its website, Mount Bohemia advises visitors to watch out for "rocks, logs, stumps, and other hazards underneath the snow."
The push for May skiing marks a significant departure from last winter when low snowfall hobbled many Midwest ski areas. This winter has looked different, though. Mount Bohemia's ski season began in early December. That month alone, 53.5 inches of snow fell in Keweenaw County, where the ski area is located. The year prior, in December, the county only saw ten inches of snow. The snow dancing, it seems, paid off.
Mount Bohemia isn't the only mountain eyeing May skiing in Michigan.
Boyne Mountain, another popular spot for skiers in the state, hopes to remain open until Memorial Day, thanks to snow-making efforts in March. According to the ski area's website, it has stacked up 200-plus inches of the white stuff. "Don't even think about storing that gear yet," Boyne Mountain's condition report reads.
Boyne Mountain's president and general manager, Jason Perl, said, "The goal is to have the longest season in the Midwest," Bloomberg reported in March.
That's a sentiment all avid skiers can get behind.
Elsewhere in the U.S., major destinations like Palisades Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain, California, are gearing up to continue the season into May. Meanwhile, Timberline Lodge, Oregon, will remain open for skiing and riding during the summer, as is tradition.
