We're always big fans of increasing our safety margins when skiing in the backcountry, and avalanche airbag backpacks are undoubtedly a great way to do that. Backcountry Access (BCA) has long been ahead of the game with their Float airbag packs, featuring well-designed packs at competitive prices for backcountry skiers. In particular, BCA's smaller Float packs have long been tester favorites among resort-based freeride skiers venturing into their favorite sidecountry powder stashes. A few years ago, BCA offered their first electric fan-powered airbag packs (using the AlpRide E2 System). These were somewhat bulky, available only in larger sizes that weren't particularly conducive to lift-access skiing.

Today, BCA dropped a new 15-liter variant of the E2 pack aimed at lift-access freeriding, snowmobiling, and heli or cat skiing. This tiny stripped-down airbag pack features an internal shovel and probe sleeve, a few small accessory pockets, radio compatibility, a side-access zipper, and diagonal ski carry.

The Alpride E2 system uses a supercapacitor and two optional AA batteries to activate an electric fan to inflate the 162-liter airbag. This allows for multiple deployments in the field without the fuss of a compressed air cylinder, making this an ideal pack for airline travel. The whole pack weighs 2,631 grams.

BCA additionally released new non-airbag 25- and 35-liter Stash Packs , with extra internal storage, a dedicated shovel & probe compartment, back panel access (great for anyone skiing with a camera!), plus A-frame and diagonal ski carry options.
