Lindsey Vonn's return to the Winter Olympics didn't go as planned as the 41-year-old legend of the sport suffered a gruesome injury that ended her quest for another medal.
Vonn crashed about 13 seconds into her Alpine ski downhill race and suffered what was later confirmed to be a tibia fracture in her left leg. This came after she suffered a torn ACL in the same knee before the Olympics, with the bone fracture causing her to need at least five surgeries.
On Sunday, Sophie Goldschmidt, the president and CEO of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, provided an update to the AP on Vonn's status, expressing she is due for more procedures.
“We’re working through all of that at the moment,” Goldschmidt said. “We’ve got a great team around helping her and she’ll go back to the U.S. for further surgeries.”
Vonn provided fans with a bit of an update herself on Friday, as she took to Instagram to reveal how trying the past week or so has been.
“It’s been a quite hard few days here in the hospital here,” Vonn said. “I’m finally feeling more like myself, but I have a long way to go. Tomorrow, I’ll have another surgery, and hopefully that goes well. Then I can potentially leave and go back home, at which point I’ll need another surgery. Don’t know exactly what that entails until I get some better imaging.”
Vonn came into the 2026 Winter Olympics with three medals to her name, one gold and two bronze. This year's Games marked the fifth Olympics of her career, as she debuted at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah at age 17.
Vonn retired after the 2018-19 season due to injuries but opted to return for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Her plans for future competitions have yet to be revealed.
