Mohawk Mountain, the largest (by vertical drop and skiable acres) and oldest ski area in Connecticut, will open on Friday, December 6th, 2024.
“We can’t wait to see you this weekend!!” the ski area wrote in a social media post.
The ski area’s opening day will see lift operation between noon and 4 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, Mohawk Mountain will offer lift-served skiing between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Between December 6th and December 8th, discounted, early-season $25 lift tickets are available. Standard weekend and holiday lift tickets to Mohawk Mountain cost $81.
Last winter, Mohawk Mountain first opened on December 2nd with two trails and two lifts. The ski area hasn’t shared on social media what terrain it plans to open for skiing this weekend.
Mohawk Mountain isn’t alone in its effort to kick off the 2024 and 2025 Connecticut ski season. This weekend, Mt. Southington shared on social media that it had begun snowmaking. At Ski Sundown, snowmaking is also underway. Powder Ridge Mountain Park & Resort plans to share operational updates this week.
Statewide, cold temperatures are expected this week with snowfall Wednesday evening, meaning Mohawk Mountain visitors might be treated to a bit of fresh powder come Friday.
Elsewhere in the Northeast, the ski season is gaining momentum. In the past week, Killington, Vermont, has received more than two feet of snow, and yesterday, 39 of its 155 trails were open. Sunday River, Maine, received ten inches of snow.
On Saturday and Sunday, Killington hosted another World Cup event that, in a dramatic moment, saw alpine racing favorite Mikaela Shiffrin crash on the cusp of her 100th win. It’s not yet clear how many World Cup races Shiffrin will miss as she recovers.
The Northeast at large is set to benefit from colder and snowier conditions over the next few days, according to the latest Powderchasers forecast.
But Mohawk Mountain just needs cold weather. Founded in 1947, the ski area now has 100% snowmaking coverage on all of its 112 skiable acres.
