Loretto Ski Hill is no longer operating, but is now up for sale on Canada's REALTOR website for two and a half million dollars. Located just over an hour from Toronto and about 1 hour from Collingwood, according to the real estate listing, Loretto Ski Hill is spread over a 75 acre parcel of land.
The listing describes the property as a "natural landscape" that includes "mature woods, park-like grounds and several changes in elevation and is the ideal blank canvas ready to be shaped into your unique country retreat." Watch a video detailing Loretto Ski Hill below.
The property also boasts a spring fed swimming pond with a private beach. A new Airstream sits at the water's edge and provides a unique opportunity to enjoy the land while planning a build.
There are actually three ski hills found on the property, along with cross-country ski trails that double as hiking/biking paths.
One commenter noted that this video was a "nice trip down memory lane." There is certainly an element of history to the area. The resort was originally built by the couple Frank and Greshina Stripinis in 1963/4 and opened in 1965.
Upon opening, the resort boasted three runs, one T-bar, and one rope tow, servicing 185 vertical feet. Loretto Ski Hill was reportedly opened as a weekend hobby for Frank, while he spent his weeks working at Ontario Hydro.
The resort had an accompanying ski club, deemed the Loretto Ski Club, which was started shortly after the resort opened. Unfortunately, while Loretto Ski Hill operated for 34 years, until 1999, Frank ultimately decided that maintaining the resort was too much work and sold the property.
Frank's son Linas took over a small portion of the operations by continuing to run The Chalet, a Ski and Board Shop.
It will be interesting to see who purchases this piece of land. While it is gorgeous, these types of properties can be tough sells for die-hard skiers, as they are not necessarily viable business opportunities, and while the terrain is beautiful, it does not seem especially challenging.
However, for a wealthy family or boutique investor, this could be the perfect opportunity to reimagine a life spent on or off the grid, surrounded by nature.
