The Maine ski season is sadly coming to an end.

One major resort in the state, Sunday River, has announced that it will close on Sunday, April 27. Another, Sugarloaf, might wrap up ski operations this coming weekend, too, but left the option for a bit more bonus skiing on Saturday, May 3, weather dependent.

On Sunday, Sunday River’s final day of operations, lift tickets are—get this—free. That’s right. For the price of exactly zero dollars, you, too, can soak in all the closing day shenanigans at Sunday River—no strings or ticket wickets are attached. You can grab one of these free lift tickets online in advance.

“It's been an incredible season, and we're so grateful you've been part of it. Let's send it off right with sunshine, soft snow, and a few more stories to tell,” Sunday River’s snow report reads.

Regardless, if you’re a Maine local or prospective visitor to the Pine Tree state, your time to notch lift-accessed turns is running out—Sunday River and Sugarloaf are the state’s final two still-operating ski areas.

Once they’re done, you’ll have to start thinking about an off-season activity, like rollerblading, archery, or gravel skiing. We hear the latter is particularly nice this time of year.

At Sunday River, the Jordan 8 will spin between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on both days of the weekend. The resort is hosting a barbecue on the Sliders deck, too. In the meantime, Sunday River is temporarily closed mid-week.

Sugarloaf is capping off its maybe-closing-weekend with a DJ from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by live music until 5 p.m. On Monday, April 28, the ski resort will close and evaluate its slopes mid-week to see about that Saturday bonus day.

On the off chance those plans don’t pan out, we advise stopping by Sugarloaf this Sunday. What’s the worst that could happen? You get an extra day of spring skiing in? We could think of far more unpleasant punishments.
