When the lifts in Idaho and Montana stop spinning for the winter, a beacon of hope on the state border opens up for those who just can't stop frothing for ski season. After a hiatus in 2024, the magical land known as Beartooth Basin reopened this summer to give skiers in the northern Rockies a few more turns for the year.

Beartooth Basin opened for the 2025 Summer season on May 28th and has sold out several days since. Jackson Hole-based skier Veronica Paulsen made the pilgrimage north through Yellowstone National Park for a bit more skiing action this past weekend.

Paulsen told POWDER that despite things getting a little low tide, Beartooth's open terrain still had "primo slush bumps." Other skiers had also taken pieces of the fallen cornice and shaped them into "fun jibby" features and small jumps at the base of the bowl. From the footage Paulsen sent over, it looked like a 10/10 weekend of late-season skiing in the high alpine.

Paulsen also took a side quest, as anyone would, to the Bear Creek Downs Pig Races in Red Lodge, Montana. Spectators can bet on and watch a cohort of tiny pigs race a little track at the Bear Creek Saloon and Steakhouse. It's adorable, to say the least.

Beartooth Basin tentatively plans to keep the lifts spinning until June 15th. While the snowpack has been freezing overnight and creating some great corn skiing conditions, as Paulsen reported, a low-tide start and warm weather during the day have meant a short season for the ski area.
