Idaho Ski Area Eyes Historic Skiing in May

One season extension, apparently, wasn’t enough.

After wrapping up what was supposed to be the final weekend of skiing, Bogus Basin, Idaho, now has its eyes on giving skiers another send-off.

The ski area teased the news in a silly social media post, hinting at lift-accessed skiing in May for the second time in Bogus Basin’s 83-year history. Tap or click below to watch as Bogus Basin's decision makers concede to reopening in May.

“Mark your calendars,” the post reads. “May 3rd is the day—Details to come.”

Bogus Basin was last open on April 19 and April 20 for what had been billed as a “bonus weekend” of skiing and riding. The weekend festivities included a pond skim and live music. Fun costumes were encouraged. The ski area, for now, is closed.

Lookout Pass—the only ski area in Idaho (technically, it straddles the state line between Idaho and Montana) that hasn’t concluded the 2024-2025 ski season, according to On The Snow—plans to re-open this weekend with a closing date of April 27.

Should Bogus Basin pursue the May 3rd re-opening, it’ll be the only place in the state where skiers and snowboarders can still ride a chairlift. We think most skiers, particularly Bogus Basin locals, would selfishly agree that this is an accolade worth pursuing. Who among us doesn’t want a longer ski season?

The May re-opening would also lead to Bogus Basin outpacing Big Sky—the last open ski resort in Montana, according to On The Snow—which, like Lookout Pass, plans to close on April 27.

There is another relatively local curveball, though.

One ski area, Beartooth Basin, Wyoming, plans to open for the first time this season in late May. Beartooth is a humble hill with two lifts, which only operates in the summer. Last year, the ski area was closed due to a lack of winter snowfall.

Beyond Beartooth Basin, skiers in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho who want to continue skiing in late May and don't mind taking a road trip will need to head further afield to ski resorts like Crystal Mountain, Washington, or Palisades Tahoe, California.
