Just One Skier Was Nominated for the 2025 ESPYs

ESPYs season is upon us, and this year, only one skier made the nomination cut: Lindsey Vonn. She is, however, joined by one other snowsports athlete, Paralympic snowboarder Noah Elliott.

Vonn’s inclusion in the award show nominations follows her breakout comeback season. After undergoing knee surgery and leaving retirement at 40, she led a successful World Cup campaign, capping off the season with a second-place finish at the finals in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Fittingly, Vonn has been nominated for the ESPYs in the “best comeback athlete,” alongside Colorado Avalanche hockey player Gabe Landeskog, who returned to the ice after a years-long injury hiatus. The four-athlete group is rounded out by Suni Lee, a gymnast, and Mallory Swanson, a soccer player.

Vonn fans can vote for her—and the other athletes—in the ESPYs poll by following this link.

Win or not, Vonn already has some ESPY hardware. In 2010 and 2011, she claimed the ESPYs-anointed-title “female athlete of the year.” She also won “best female U.S. Olympic athlete” in 2010 and “best moment” in 2019. Vonn’s teammate, Mikaela Shiffrin, is another ski racer who has earned an award at the ESPYs.

Shiffrin was a notable snub from the 2025 ESPY nominations. She did not earn a nomination for 'Best Record Breaking Performance' despite being the first skier to ever claim 100 victories on the World Cup circuit.

The yearly awards, presented by ESPN, celebrate athletes for their achievements in their respective sports, covering everything from swimming to football. The show will be held this summer on July 16, airing live from The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Comedian Shane Gillis is set to host. Outside of snowsports, well-known nominated athletes include Caitlin Clark, Coco Gauff, and Simone Biles.

Outside of her comeback, Vonn’s legacy on the race course is already assured. With 82 World Cup wins, she’s the second-winningest female alpine racer of all time behind Mikalea Shiffrin. Vonn’s expansive trophy case also includes three Olympic medals and 20 World Cup globes.
