Skiing in Vermont in the month of May is... challenging.
Killington is known for having one of the longest seasons in the entire country, let alone the East Coast, but the replacement of the resort's famous Superstar Express has altered spring operations this year. Instead of skiing the beloved Superstar Glacier, skiers and riders are enjoying terrain accessible from the Canyon Quad.
The resort is holding on until every last drop of snow melts, as is tradition, but recently made an important announcement about operations this week. According to a social media post, "Mother Nature has taken its toll on a few key areas of terrain," which is forcing the resort to temporarily close.
Killington will be closed today, May 7th through Friday, May 9th to preserve snow, and allow the resort's grooming team to, "work their magic on the hill". The resort initially intended to remain for daily skiing through this week before transitioning to weekend-only operations, but Mother Nature's warm temps and rainy weather have proved to be challenging.

Killington intends to reopen for skiing and riding on Saturday, May 10th and Sunday, May 11th. It presumably will assess conditions before making a decision about opening the following weekend.
The resort reaffirmed its commitment to remaining open for as long as possible, however, in the social media post: "Mother Nature has taken its toll on a few key areas of terrain, but we are committed to extending the season for as long as possible."
Jay Peak, Vermont is also monitoring conditions for a possible bonus weekend of skiing. The resort stated earlier this week that it's, "pushing" to reopen on Friday, May 9th, but conditions and weather will ultimately have the final say.
Jay Peak and Killington are New England's last-standing ski resorts. Stay tuned in here at POWDER as we continue to track the end of their respective seasons.
