Lake Tahoe's Ski Season is About To Get Underway

Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, known as Reno, Nevada's local ski area, and for having the highest base elevation in the region, is usually the first ski resort open in Lake Tahoe.

Rose took to Instagram on October 30, 2024 with a tantalizing video of snowmaking guns firing on all cylinders, and a caption that has local skiers hanging on the edge of their seats: "This week has given us an ideal window for snowmaking, with even more snow expected this weekend thanks to some help from Mother Nature!"

According to OpenSnow, Mt. Rose is expected to pick up 1-2 inches of natural snowfall throughout the weekend. Now, that's exciting for early-November, but not quite enough to open a ski area. No matter, the remainder of Rose's caption lays the groundwork for the ski area to open.

"The colder temperatures have kept our snowmaking crews busy, producing ‘whales’ at each snow gun," writes Mt. Rose. "These massive snow piles will soon be spread out to help get that crucial early season base. Stay tuned for more later this week."

Mt. Rose has not announced an opening day yet, but some internet commenters are speculating that next Friday, November 8, 2024 could be in the cards. Relief is surely washing over the Rose locals as this season was almost in jeopardy due to a large wildfire over the summer.

Mt. Rose opened for Winter '23/'24 on November 10, 2023. I was on-hand to film a sponsored video, but my day on the hill certainly didn't feel like work. The vibe and excitement for the season to come was palpable. As a resident of nearby Truckee, California, you can bet your left ski that I will be at Rose next week if the ski area does open.

We will continue to update this article as more information is revealed by Mt. Rose. Based on the caption, don't be surprised if an opening day announcement happens today, October 31, or tomorrow, November 1.

Elsewhere across Tahoe, ski resorts are beginning to make snow for the first time as a cold snap settles in across the region. Natural snow could stack up to the tune of 10 inches at Palisades Tahoe throughout the weekend, but the resort doesn't intend to open until Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
