What should have been a glorious fifth Winter Olympics for Lindsey Vonn ended in disaster. The iconic United States skier headed into the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics with the hope of winning her fourth medal. Vonn won gold in downhill and bronze in super-G at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. She bagged another bronze at the downhill competition in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

Vonn’s bid for her second gold medal came to a bitter end after she crashed in the downhill final on Sunday. She had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital, where she underwent surgery to address a fractured tibia in her left leg.

Vonn’s latest injury ended her fifth Winter Olympics stint. She was supposed to compete in the team combined and super-G events, but her leg injury forced her to withdraw from both.

When Vonn revealed the extent of her injury, she also said that the leg would require multiple surgeries. On Saturday, the four-time World Cup champion took to social media to provide another update. Vonn announced that she underwent another surgery. The Saint Paul, Minnesota, native also revealed her decision to leave Italy and return home to the U.S.

“Surgery went well today! Thankfully I will be able to finally go back to the US ! Once I’m back I will give you more updates and info about my injury,” she wrote.

Vonn will now head back to the U.S., where she will continue her rehab. She will not be able to take part in the Winter Olympics closing ceremonies on Feb. 22. Vonn will be cheering for Team USA from home.

Vonn also sent a lengthy message reflecting on her injury and the aftermath of the unfortunate turn of events. Vonn expressed how she holds no regrets. The skiing icon also stated how she hopes to return once her injury heals.

“So please, don’t feel sad. The ride was worth the fall. When I close my eyes at night I don’t have regrets and the love I have for skiing remains. I am still looking forward to the moment when I can stand on the top of the mountain once more. And I will. ❤️” she ended her post.

While Vonn did not confirm anything in her post, it appears that she has no plans of retiring anytime soon. She knows her body well, and it seems that she is adamant that she still has a lot of gas left in the tank.
