Lindsey Vonn’s 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics ended in misery. The decorated alpine ski racer suffered a major injury in her first medal event, ruling her out for the rest of the Winter Games. This unfortunate development, however, has not prevented her from cheering for her fellow Team USA athletes. This includes skiing teammate Mikaela Shiffrin.
Shiffrin took center stage on Wednesday in the slalom final. The 30-year-old stepped it up when the lights were the brightest, securing her first gold medal in eight years. Shiffrin dominated the field, finishing with a 1.50-second lead over Switzerland’s Camille Rast, who came in second.
Shiffrin failed to medal in her first two events in this year’s Winter Games. She came in fourth in the inaugural team combined event alongside teammate Breezy Johnson. Shiffrin then placed 11th in the giant slalom.
The slalom is Shiffrin’s strongest competition, and she proved on Wednesday exactly why this is the case. She won her fourth Olympic medal — and her third gold — to tie the record for most Winter Games medals won by a female U.S. athlete in alpine skiing.
Vonn took to social media to share her reaction to Shiffrin’s historic milestone.
“Huge contrats!!” Vonn wrote, tagging Shiffrin in the former’s Instagram story.
Vonn is a legend in the alpine skiing world as well. She has three Olympic medals in her collection — one gold and two bronze medals.
Vonn was tied with Shiffrin with three Olympic medals before Wednesday’s race. Shiffrin broke their tie with her fourth medal, and Vonn was one of the first to congratulate her.
Vonn is now back in the United States. She suffered a fractured tibia in her left leg after her crash at the downhill race. She has undergone multiple rounds of surgery with more underway.
