A mountain slide early Sunday morning, June 15, 2025, prompted the indefinite closure of the road on Loveland Pass between two Colorado ski areas, Loveland Ski Area and Arapahoe Basin.

The slide, which crossed U.S. Highway 6 near mile marker 226, was approximately 100 feet wide and 20 feet deep, according to social media posts shared by the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office. No vehicles or people were caught, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office wrote.

The incident, according to CDOT, was caused by material that became saturated by melting snow before sliding onto the roadway. U.S. Highway 6 remains closed from just east of Arapahoe Basin to Loveland Ski Area, per COtrip, a digital map that shows road closures around Colorado.

CDOT said Monday that crews have begun debris removal operations. There is no estimated time of reopening for the roadway, and CDOT urged motorists, hikers, and cyclists to avoid the area until the clean-up is finished. In another update published Monday, CDOT noted that travelers could expect delays on I-70 involving traffic holds at the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels to let hazmat vehicles pass through.

Arapahoe Basin ended its lift-accessed ski season on June 15, the same day as the slide, but still welcomed crowds of skiers and snowboarders. Its summer operations, which begin June 27, won’t be impacted by the road closure, according to Shayna Silverman, the ski area’s communications manager.

Visitors from Denver can reach Arapahoe Basin by driving to Silverthorne, getting on U.S. Highway 6, and then going past Keystone.

“This alternative route is nearly the same driving time as taking the pass,” Silverman wrote in an email. “So folks can still come up from the Front Range to beat the city heat in less than an hour and a half.”
