The news we have all been waiting for is here— Mammoth Mountain, California has confirmed that they intend to remain open for skiing and snowboarding through at least Memorial Day, May 26, 2025.
"With longer days and warmer temps on the horizon, spring skiing is at our doorstep," writes Mammoth in a social media post. "Mammoth has received over 10 feet of snowfall since February and with such a solid base comes another season of skiing and riding through Memorial Day - get up here!"
Despite a slow start to the season, Mammoth's high elevation and cool winds preserve the snowpack longer than every ski resort in the region. The resort closed after Memorial Day last season to work on new chairlift upgrades, but it's not uncommon for chairlifts to spin throughout the month of June.
In fact, Mammoth Mountain stayed open until August 6, 2023 after a record-breaking season saw more than 800 inches of snow fall at the Summit. Mammoth's seasonal snowfall total is sitting at 258 inches to date this year, but it's proving to be plenty.
Don't be surprised if Mammoth extends its closing day into June if spring storms start to add up. I will continue to keep tabs as Mammoth's closing day is will most likely be my closing day as well!
Mammoth's neighbor and sister resort June Mountain has also extended their ski season by one week. Announced on March 20, June will remain open for skiing and riding through April 20, 2025, conditions and weather permitting.
June shared their reasoning for extending the season. Spoiler alert, it has everything to do with how snowy March has been. "Thanks to an awesome early March where more than 40” of snow fell, we’re excited to keep things rolling well into spring," writes June. "See you out there!"
Elsewhere in California, Big Bear Mountain Resort confirmed that it received enough snow in March to keep the party going in April. Things were looking grim before the recent snowfall, but Mother Nature has a knack for the dramatics.
Big Bear has not committed to a firm closing date, but is encouraging skiers to stay tuned in on their social media accounts for updates. "Miracle March has come through," writes Big Bear. "Our base depths and coverage are at their best of the season. We’re stoked to announce that operations will continue through April, with a full lineup of must-see events."
Winter 24/25 won't go down in California's history as being particularly memorable for deep snowfall, but here's hoping spring snow showers and beautiful sunshine serve up a second season worth celebrating.
