After a serious crash in the Olympics that led to a complex tibia fracture, Lindsey Vonn, the ski racing superstar, is sharing another update with her fans.
More surgeries are on the way, Vonn explained in a video posted on Friday.
“It has been quite a hard few days in the hospital here. I'm finally feeling more like myself,” she said. “I have a long, long way to go. Tomorrow I'll have another surgery, and hopefully that goes well, and then I can potentially leave and go back home, at which point I will need another surgery. Still don't know exactly what that entails yet until I get some better imaging, but it's kind of where I am right now.”
She added that she’s in the hospital and “very much immobile, but I have a lot of friends and family that have been coming to visit.”
“I feel very lucky and fortunate to have so many people around me that have really helped me get through this, so I just wanted to say thank you and go Team USA," she said.
Earlier in the week, Vonn shared that she’d undergone her third surgery following the fall.
Her saga, which has become one of the Olympics’ biggest stories, started in 2024 when Vonn announced that she was coming out of retirement in her 40s. That winter, she led a successful comeback campaign, capping the season off with an impressive finish at the super-G race in Sun Valley, Idaho.
This winter, Vonn kicked into another gear.
She cruised on to the World Cup in almost every race entered, setting a strong precedent on ski racing’s professional circuit and becoming a medal favorite as the Olympics approached. But then, before her debut at the Games, she ruptured her ACL.
She opted to race anyway, competing in the Olympic downhill without the ligament. Moments into the race, though, she caught a gate on the course, spun sideways in the air, and crashed. Vonn was airlifted off the course.
Before the race, she posted the third fastest time in training.
And in a social media post following the crash, Vonn dispelled the idea her ACL was to blame, writing, “I was simply 5 inches too tight on my line when my right arm hooked inside of the gate, twisting me and resulted in my crash. My ACL and past injuries had nothing to do with my crash whatsoever.”
“While yesterday did not end the way I had hoped, and despite the intense physical pain it caused, I have no regrets,” she added. “Standing in the starting gate yesterday was an incredible feeling that I will never forget.”
