In California, winter’s here. Well, not quite, but this morning, September 30, 2025, Mammoth Mountain woke up to a dusting of fresh snow at its summit.
Vincent Valencia captured footage of the recent storm. Mammoth Mountain, in a social media post, provided a reminder to amped skiers, “No it’s not open yet." That didn’t stop one commenter from writing, “Looks open to me.” Another relied on a tried and true acronym: “Lfgggg.”
It’s only a matter of time, folks. See the new snow below.
With a planned season start date of November 14, 2025, Mammoth Mountain is aiming to be one of the first-open ski resorts in California.
What will Mammoth Mountain’s opening day bring?
Tough to say. Bottomless powder or limited groomer skiing are both possibilities, but if you’re a diehard skier, you know that already. Regardless, come November 14, Mammoth fans will be skiing, conditions permitting—that’s only 45 days away.
The recent snow, of course, will likely be gone and replaced by a more permanent snowpack by then—the weather should be in the mid-50s and sunny today at the ski resort. Still, it’s an exciting reminder of colder times to come.
Across North America, there have been numerous other winter teases. Last week, a storm deposited snow at ski resorts across Colorado, visiting mountains like Arapahoe Basin, Winter Park, Breckenridge, and Loveland. Snow recently appeared at Arizona Snowbowl and Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, too.
Once Mammoth Mountain’s season starts, visitors and locals alike can anticipate a long winter. The ski resort has a reputation for staying open into June or, sometimes, much later. During the 2022-23 season, the ski resort racked up record snow and kept its lifts open until August.
Last May, I stopped by Mammoth to see what all the hype was about and, safe to say, came away impressed. There was an unseasonal snowstorm followed by a few days of warm, clear weather. I even skied something resembling powder. Here’s to fortuitous Californian weather in the coming months.
