Sugar Bowl Resort, California, has long been a slightly slept-on—but nevertheless very rad—Lake Tahoe area destination with impressive big mountain zones like the Palisades (not to be confused with the other Palisades). The mountain’s brewed up some very talented big mountain skiers.
This season, Sugar Bowl is doubling down on a different separate aspect of its terrain footprint: freestyle.
Dubbed Sugar Bowl Parks | CA, the slate of park offerings is designed to create an environment capable of nurturing and generating highly competitive freestyle skiers. Included are three park areas: Peregrine Ridge, Golden Eagle, and the Condor—in order of feature size and difficulty. The three lanes will be accessible from the Christmas Tree Express.
“Our vision is to offer a full-size progression facility that can bring young freestyle athletes onto the world stage,” said Bridget Legnavsky, CEO of Sugar Bowl.
To create the parks, Sugar Bowl is working alongside some industry heavy-hitters, including the likes of Charles Beckinsale and Steve Petrie. Beckinsale is one of freeskiing and snowboarding’s biggest park-builder names. Adding to the combined talent are new park manager Mike Shipani and head designer Brandon Dodds.
"I’ve been in terrain parks for 26 years and I’ve done a lot of high performance camps and training. I’m really excited to bring kids here and provide a place for them to progress their skills," said Dodds.
“As an athlete who grew up in Lake Tahoe during the golden era of park skiing—when top-tier parks were at every resort here and across the country—there's nothing I want more than to see Tahoe back on the map as a hotspot for park skiing,” said Skogan Sprang, freeski sport director for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team. “For the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team to continue excelling at the Olympic, World Cup, and X Games levels, we need more resorts investing in world-class parks and pipes.”
This past winter saw Sugar Bowl embrace two events that celebrated core freeskiing. The Silver Belt Classic reintroduced a classic competition with a new school twist that featured a natural terrain park. During the event day, athletes hit cliffs and jumps, melding the disciplines of freeride and slopestyle together. It was one hell of a show.
Jib League, too, appeared at Sugar Bowl last winter. Created by professional freeskiers James Woods, Øystein Bråten, and Ferdinand Dahl, Jib League remixes the standard freestyle comp format, encouraging invited riders to ski how they like—as opposed to appeasing judging panels at more rigid, rules-oriented events.
