What is it with the color orange? It seems like all around Palisades Tahoe, CA, skiers wearing orange just feel the need for speed. And cliffs. And huckin' stuff.
Tahoe Pro Ryan Faye confirms this observation, creating a "Lil Thursday morning mashup feat. a couple mellow lines for the soul! Got the holy Palisades trinity: Palisades, Mainline Pocket, Granite Chief Peak; we are so back baby."
The Palisades (the spot, not the resort), Mainline Pocket, and Granite Chief Peak are all hike-able areas of terrain offering more of a thrill than a lot of the lift-specific terrain (besides the Fingers) accessible from major lifts around the mountain.
Though the Palisades and Mainline Pocket are the most easily recognizable to the average skier, Granite Chief Peak has its place as hosting world-class terrain.
With the recent snowfall, these areas filled in enough to be able to hit send.
However, Ryan's version of mellow and my (and really most people's) version of mellow are very different things.
Nonetheless, Faye took a cruisy day on his scale to record both the POVs and filmed footage of him dropping into steep lines with mandatory airs. Sooo mellow, right?
The real question is what would constitute the holy Palisades trinity if it's line specific? There are so many options at all of these iconic spots, and the Squ*llywood crowd froths on 'em all.
For Granite Chief Peak, maybe that line would be Robert Frost?
I'm also sad the Fingers didn't make this trinity, although I get it. Maybe we're talking specifically hike-to terrain, or upper mountain terrain. However, I'd maybe swap Granite Chief Peak for the Fingers if we were doing the biggest hero factor trinity.
The Fingers are directly in view for everyone riding KT-22, adding that extra element of bashfulness for anyone less than a seasoned, point-collecting ski star.
They're also out of view when you come down off the lift, making them a little scarier as you have only the ride up to inspect your line before going, unless you stop and get heckled by everyone on the lift.
Noah Gaffney demonstrated the hero factor of the Fingers after a big storm last season.
I'm beginning to think Faye is being a little ironic when he describes his lines as "chill" and "mellow". Like this one where he had a "chill morning" and casually decided to try a "lil backflip."
He did admit this takes practice, though, writing, "pretty excited to get redemption on this guy after getting splatted yesterday! Nothing like a little east wind pushing against the rotation to keep things spicy."
If you see someone dressed in head-to-toe orange, give them a shaka and wish them a chill rest of their day. They're probably about to do a super casual, totally mellow, irie backflip.
